DISCOUNTED CONDE

HARD CONDE:

We haven't posted much on the mayhem   at Conde Nast lately since consulting firm McKinsey & Co descended upon the publication.

Gawker reports that they have talked to an insider at Conde Nast and the McKinsey's proposals suggested:

  • Budget reductions of around 25% at Details, Traveler, Glamour, Gourmet, andTeen Vogue.
  • Unknown budget cuts at the rest of the Conde mags—except the New Yorker, which is escaping unscathed, according to the NYO.
  • The various mag editors get to determine how to achieve their budget cuts.
  • No immediate magazine closures are predicted, but some of the weaker titles may reduce their frequency.
  • Layoffs are coming

  • We loved Gawker's catch phrase.  Bumper sticker please!!!

Serving the Rich, Life's a Bitch!

    GARGANTUAN GAULTIER GOODS

    WE HEAR:

There is endless chirping that Target is after Jean Paul Gaultier to collaborate on a capsule collection for the mass retailer.

All camps have said nothing, nada, zip, zilch on said rumors.

Cone bras to the masses.... we are so there!!!

    BARNEY'S BOHO

Okay now we love us some Barney's, especially the BevHills local. Descending that staircase that is in the middle of the store: we give our best Alexis Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan about to take over Colby Co. walk.

But we're getting way off track.

With the economic downturn, Barney's has a mannequin situated that could be mistaken for a homelessness display.

The offensive display is at the Manhattan store in the CO-OP section.

Some observers are saying its not a homeless guy but a gent hungover, passed out on a park bench from the previous night of overindulgence and debauchery.

Aren't mannequins supposed to inspire, be muses? Doesn't the customer want to be the display? What part of drunk and hungover is attractive?

    What do you say?

Let's get Simon Doonan (Jonathan Adler's hubby) on the line and inquire?

    TOM FORD'S ENLARGEMENT?

His business, we're talking about his business, folks--not what's in his pants.

Ford wants to expand Tom Ford Inc. and the designer is looking for a $50 million finance deal to branch out into womenswear.

UPDATE: Recant that. Don't have Harvey Weinstein doing anything-- massive layoffs are looming at the film company.

    NUMBERS GAME

It will take a couple of days for the register tape to settle and get some idea of what dollar amount this event totaled for stores but thousands came out to celebrate shopping again for Fashion Night Out.

Nearly a 1000 people jammed the Macys in Queens Center to get a glimpse of VOGUE's EIC Anna Wintour.

"It's bigger than our wildest dreams," quipped the editrix.

Even Mayor Bloomberg arrived to join her in all the festivities. The mayor was only able to partake a short time at the US Open matches earlier that afternoon.

Bloomberg rattled the numbers off: NYC has a $10 billion fashion industry that employs 175,000 people. That is more apparel-related business that the world's fashion epicenter, Paris.

    Macys sold 6000 FNO t-shirts by 5pm at $30 a pop.

Some bought, some fraught. But the main thing it extracted people from the confines of their home and reintroduce them to the wonderful emporiums that sell fabulous wares.

    SUNDANCE DANCES FOR PROENZA SCHOULER

You readers already know that we are fans of Proenza Schouler and the hot men behind the line.

So we were delighted to learn that the Sundance Channel has a series The Day Before documenting various designers 24 hours before their fashion shows.

Last night was a screening for Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez for their label Proenza Schouler.

The men are weathering the recession and business is up compared to last year for these two.

To make use of an old  70's phrase: "Hang in there, Baby."
